Kotaku reports that after four years of development the open beta for KYBER, a community-hosted multiplayer launcher for EA’s Star Wars Battlefront II, launched on December 20 and has proved popular with longtime fans.

KYBER adds features such as proximity voice chat, a spectator mode, integrated Discord support, expanded mod support and new characters including Cal Kestis and Asajj Ventress. The project’s community manager Ethan Clark said the team “worked nonstop all week, doing our best to help the content and mod creation communities fire on all cylinders” after the May 24 “Resurgence Day” campaign. In June 2025, Star Wars Battlefront II saw an all-time peak of 35,892 players, up from 10,489 in January 2021; that surge was attributed to a Reddit fan campaign and a bargain bin sale price of $5.

The official KyberServers account said the open beta drew "61,169 unique players" and "1,339,489 sessions" within the first 48 hours, and Reddit users called it “it’s like Battlefront 2 but with more classes, guns, some balance changes too.” Armchair Developers said the open beta has no hard end date and promised the source code "will be made available to the public" later this month, with further balance patches already planned.
