Kyle Buchanan, ‘The Projectionist,’ prepares for Oscar nominations amid awards season
Awards season is underway and Oscar nominations will be announced this Thursday, with Kyle Buchanan, known as The Projectionist, set to cover the early nomination action. The Oscar ceremony is scheduled for March 15. Buchanan told the paper he has been following most films with Oscar potential since late August, when he made back-to-back trips to the Venice and Toronto film festivals.
“By the end of those two weeks,” he said, “I will have seen all but a handful of the movies that are presumed to be Oscar contenders.” At festivals, he said he often sees three or four movies a day while attending adjacent events, and that parties serve as opportunities for gathering “intel.” He recalled that Lionsgate once staged “orgiastic victory lap parties” for The Hunger Games at the Cannes Film Festival, renting a chateau and dressing it to look like the Capitol.
Buchanan said he is watching the supporting actress category closely and named several performances already in contention — Amy Madigan in Weapons, Teyana Taylor in One Battle After Another, Elle Fanning and Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas in Sentimental Value, actresses from Marty Supreme, Wunmi Mosaku in Sinners, and Chase Infiniti in One Battle After Another.
