Lamine Yamal misses penalty as Girona stun Barcelona with controversial winner

Girona sprung a shock at Montilivi, beating Barcelona 2-1 in a result that dents the Catalans' title hopes. After 17 minutes Lamine Yamal was sent through one-on-one with goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga and fired straight at the ex-Tottenham stopper; on the stroke of half-time he then hit the post from the penalty awarded when Dani Olmo was fouled by Daley Blind.

Raphinha had also dragged a presentable chance wide and struck the post before the break. Barça took the lead on the hour when Pau Cubarsi headed into the top corner from Jules Kounde's cross, his first-ever league goal for the club. He failed to clear immediately, though, and Thomas Lemar was on hand to level almost instantly.

Joan Garcia made several important saves but was beaten by Fran Beltran in the 87th minute; a VAR check suggested the referee might rule the goal out for a foul on Kounde, yet the goal stood, prompting fury from the Barca bench. Barcelona thought they had a late equaliser but Robert Lewandowski was ruled offside.
