Levitating at Sundance follows a spirit channeler using trance parties to stop eviction
In a Collider review, Jeff Ewing writes that Levitating (Para Perasuk) — directed by Wregas Bhanuteja and starring Angga Yunanda and Maudy Ayunda — premiered at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival and follows Bayu, a hopeful spirit channeler working to halt an eviction by perfecting trance parties.
The film centers on Bayu joining with the traumatized Laksmi to train for a competition meant to name the top channeler and raise money to prevent his father (played by Indra Birowo) from selling their home to a developer and moving back to Jakarta. Bayu must overcome his rage toward his father and learn to control possessing spirits as the story continually surprises.
Ewing praises Bhanuteja’s direction for finding cinematic ways to convey the subjective experience of trance: an electric opening ritual, gorgeously shot choreography, and recurring surreal sequences that even show dancers levitating as the conditions of the rituals shift. The review singles out performances, calling Angga Yunanda vibrant and physically committed as Bayu and Maudy Ayunda extraordinary as Laksmi, noting the cast’s physicality elevates the large-group trance moments and several standout embodiment sequences.
