Linux developer ports Windows 8–style desktop to Linux with Win8DE
A Linux developer who goes by er-bharat on GitHub has created Win8DE, a desktop environment for Linux that closely resembles the Windows 8 user interface.
The project is in alpha and the latest release is v0.5.0. ZDNet's author said they spent roughly two hours trying to install Win8DE but encountered dependency issues, though the developer's GitHub page includes screenshots and an animated clip showing the card-like UI. The article also notes that searches for KDE or GNOME themes that truly mimic Windows 8's card-based interface came up empty.
The article describes Win8DE as a one-person project and says it appears not ready for general use; the writer guesses it is a long way from a stable release and would not expect a 1.0 version soon. The ZDNet author also said they intend to attempt running the desktop in a virtual machine to test it further.
