Lionel Messi planning return to Barcelona after mapping out family plan — Goal

Lionel Messi continues to plan for a future in Barcelona and intends to return to Catalunya with his wife Antonela Roccuzzo and their three sons. He left Camp Nou in emotional circumstances in 2021 and is currently on a contract through 2028 with Inter Miami. In a November 2025 interview he said: “I really want to go back there, we miss Barcelona a lot.” Messi registered 672 goals for the Blaugrana in 778 appearances, helping them to 10 La Liga titles and four Champions League crowns.

Financial problems at Camp Nou meant no extension could be agreed and he left as a free agent for Paris Saint-Germain; his family struggled to settle in France. In 2023 he accepted an invitation from David Beckham to join Inter Miami and has since won Leagues Cup, Supporters’ Shield and MLS Cup honours.

Fresh terms in South Florida have left the family settled, but plans are being drawn up for a return once his MLS contract ends.
