Lions intend to hire Drew Petzing as offensive coordinator
The Detroit Lions intend to hire Drew Petzing as their next offensive coordinator, sources told Jonathan Jones of Cbssports. Petzing, 38, spent the last three seasons as the Arizona Cardinals' offensive coordinator, producing mixed results. He has coached since working as a graduate assistant at Boston College in 2010-11 and has been in the NFL since joining the Cleveland Browns as a football operations intern in 2013, with subsequent offensive assistant roles in Minnesota and Cleveland.
Jonathan Gannon hired Petzing as Arizona's offensive coordinator in 2023; the Cardinals averaged 19.4 points per game that first season and improved to 23.5 points per game in 2024 (12th in the NFL). This past season Arizona was hampered by injuries to Kyler Murray, James Conner and Marvin Harrison Jr., finished 23rd at 20.9 points per game, had the 31st-ranked rushing attack (93.1 yards per game) and a 7th-ranked passing attack (232.6 yards per game).
Petzing will have more talent to work with in Detroit, including Jared Goff, Jahmyr Gibbs, Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams and Sam LaPorta; the Lions averaged 28.3 points in what was considered a down year. Former offensive coordinator John Morton was fired after one season, and coach Dan Campbell took over playcalling in Week 10 and never relinquished it.
