Lionsgate Orders Sequel to Sydney Sweeney's The Housemaid After $100M Run
Movieweb reports that Lionsgate is moving forward with a sequel to Sydney Sweeney’s The Housemaid after the psychological thriller grossed more than $100 million at the box office.
The film, about a young woman who becomes the live-in housekeeper for a sinister, wealthy family, scored 73% on Rotten Tomatoes and found success during a crowded festive window that included Marty Supreme, Anaconda, Song Sung Blue and Avatar: Fire & Ash. Its performance surprised many who had been critical of Sweeney following a two-year stretch without a clear hit.
Recent underperformers cited include Christy, which grossed $2 million against a $15 million budget and opened to $1.3 million; Madame Web, which only matched its budget; Immaculate ($35 million); Eden ($2.5 million); and Echo Valley on Apple TV. By contrast, Anyone But You (2023) grossed $220 million. The article suggests Sweeney could benefit from more family, friendship and romance roles, but it is not yet known which projects she will pursue next.
