Manchester United are likely to appoint an interim manager for the rest of the season and wait until the summer before naming a permanent successor to Ruben Amorim, Independent.co reported.

Under-18s coach Darren Fletcher will take charge of Wednesday's match at Burnley and is expected to remain in charge for Sunday's FA Cup tie with Brighton, with Amorim dismissed on Monday. The club is considering delaying a long-term appointment to give more time to choose a preferred candidate; that would be their seventh manager, excluding caretaker and interim appointments, since Sir Alex Ferguson.

The approach mirrors 2021-22 when Ralf Rangnick was interim manager for the final five months after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked and before Erik ten Hag arrived. Fletcher will have an initial opportunity to stake a claim to lead for the rest of the campaign, though other former players and coaches could be considered, and some high-profile candidates might only become available in the summer.
