Margot Robbie borrows Elizabeth Taylor’s Cartier 'Taj Mahal' at L.A. premiere

Margot Robbie is the latest celebrity to wear a piece from Elizabeth Taylor’s legendary jewelry collection, stepping out at an L.A. premiere in the Cartier “Taj Mahal” pendant once owned by Taylor. Robbie called the necklace’s backstory “a pretty incredible history” and said it “feels like a very romantic history” on the red carpet.

Taylor, who died at 79 in 2011, was nearly as famous for her extraordinary jewel collection — several pieces were engagement rings — as for her acting and famous romances. Her jewels sold for $131 million after her death, and many of the most notable pieces were gifts from Richard Burton, who often surprised her with very high–carat gems.

The Cartier “Taj Mahal” pendant was a gift from Burton at Taylor’s 40th birthday party in Budapest and remained a signature piece for decades. It later sold for $8 million at auction and was involved in a legal dispute, according to the reporting. A press release from Taylor’s estate says the pendant bears a Parsee inscription reading “Love is Everlasting” and traces the diamond’s provenance back to Mughal-era figures including Nur Jahan, Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal — the inspiration for the Taj Mahal.

Other stars have also borrowed Taylor’s baubles. Julianne Moore wore a Bulgari emerald pendant (the center stone is 23 carats) that Bulgari repurchased for $12 million, while Jessica Chastain wore Taylor’s Bulgari sapphire sautoir to Cannes in 2013 — a piece Taylor famously wore for her 40th birthday in 1972.
