Mark Clattenburg apologised for 'clumsy' Vinicius analysis after backlash
Former Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg apologised for his "clumsy" analysis of the incident involving Real Madrid forward Vinicius and Benfica winger Gianluca Prestianni, which prompted allegations of racism. Clattenburg was part of Amazon Prime Video’s coverage of the Champions League fixture at Estadio da Luz.
On air he said of Vinicius: "Yes, he scored a wonderful goal but he should have just returned over to the other side of the pitch and he could have got on with the game. Vinicius Jr has not helped himself. He’s made this difficult for the referee. He’s scored a wonderful goal and all he has to do - yes, celebrate - is return back.
But he has made this situation very, very difficult." His remarks drew criticism on social media; Troy Townsend posted on X: "He should never be involved in commentary again." Townsend later said Clattenburg’s suggestion that Vinicius created the problem was outlandish and part of a victim‑blaming culture.
