Markiplier’s Iron Lung earns $17.8M opening weekend amid delisting claims
Markiplier’s film Iron Lung opened to $17.8 million at the box office, the sci‑fi horror earning that sum over its opening weekend and beating Malenia, Zootopia 2 and Avatar: Fire and Ash; Sam Raimi’s Send Help remained strong with $20 million for the weekend. The movie is based on the 2022 indie game by David Szymanski and follows a convicted criminal who, after an event called the “Quiet Rapture” causes most of humanity and the stars to vanish, is trapped in a welded‑shut submarine and must explore a moon’s ocean of blood for resources.
Mark Edward “Markiplier” Fischbach financed, directed, wrote and acted in the film. Fischbach, who has more than 33 million YouTube subscribers and played the original game on his channel in 2022, has been credited as a major factor in the movie’s popularity. There has been debate over the weekend after Fischbach posted a video on X noting that Iron Lung was listed number one on Jan.
30, the Friday it debuted, then appeared to be delisted from box office charts on Saturday and Sunday before becoming visible again. Fans suggested the disappearance related to the film’s indie status and some blamed major studios or distributors, and they also organized calls to theaters to encourage screenings.
Despite the brief chart disappearance and mixed reviews, Iron Lung earned far more than its production budget, which was under $3 million.
