Martin Short admitted on Wednesday's episode of "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" that he nearly ruined Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco’s September 2025 wedding in Santa Barbara by cutting into their cake, Pagesix reported. Short said he and about 12 "Only Murders in the Building" cast members, including Steve Martin and Paul Rudd, were sitting by a small wedding cake in a reception area with "big tents" and individual seating.

After a few hours he took a fork and cut the cake, later realizing it was the couple's wedding cake and that it would not be presented for another hour. Guests screamed "Marty!" and Short said Steve Martin "gained color." A photo shown on the show displayed a heart-shaped sheet cake with white frosting, black "Just Married" lettering and a bride-and-groom topper; Short said the chef rushed over and "did surgery" to repair the dessert.

Short said he and Martin tried to keep the mishap from Gomez but she learned of it before the night was over and greeted him, "Hey, Marty! I heard you tried to eat my cake!" He called the nuptials "perfect" and "beautiful" and said, "Selena is, like, an extra child of mine. We adore her so much." Gomez, 33, and Blanco, 37, began dating in the summer of 2023 and announced their engagement the following December, the same month they bought a house together in Beverly Hills; the pair have expressed a desire to have children and Gomez has said they will either use a surrogate or adopt because of her medical issues, including lupus.
