According to Goal, West Ham defender Konstantinos Mavropanos was stretchered off after suffering a head injury during the Hammers’ FA Cup third-round clash with Queens Park Rangers at the London Stadium.

The 28-year-old was involved in a nasty collision late in the first half: with 39 minutes on the clock he appeared to be shoved by QPR goalkeeper Joe Walsh and, as he fell, his head struck a defender’s knee. Medics gave lengthy treatment on the field, Mavropanos was fitted with a neck brace and carried off on a stretcher, and he was replaced by new signing Pablo Felipe. It is claimed that Mavropanos was conscious when leaving the pitch and concussion protocols now have to be followed; both sets of fans applauded as he was taken off and nine minutes of first-half stoppage were added. QPR posted on social media: “Into added time after lengthy treatment for West Ham’s Mavropanos. We wish him well.”

The tie went to extra time after Crysencio Summerville opened the scoring in added time and Richard Kone equalised in the 65th minute, with Valentin Castellanos later restoring West Ham’s lead in the 98th minute. Mavropanos has featured in 14 Premier League fixtures this season, but it remains to be seen when he will be available for selection again; West Ham are currently in the Premier League relegation zone and return to league action on January 17 at Tottenham.
