Mayor Mamdani says he hopes to install bidets at Gracie Mansion
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said he has an “aspirational hope” to install bidets in the bathrooms of Gracie Mansion after he and his wife, Rama Duwaji, moved into the official residence; a mayoral spokesperson confirmed by email that installation had already begun. In an interview with ABC 7 New York the mayor described the plan as adding a handheld $25 water gun “that you hook on the side of the toilet.” He also said, according to earlier remarks, “We’ll see if we can actually get it done.” Social media responses ranged from enthusiasm to confusion about the focus on toilets rather than policy, and a comment from Caroline Rose, the daughter of former Mayor Rudolph W.
Giuliani, said she would have installed one had she known about bidets when she lived there. The move comes amid wider signs of growing acceptance of bidets in the United States. A 2026 survey of 700 industry experts by the National Kitchen and Bath Association found 76 percent of interior designers reporting homeowners want toilets with more features and 48 percent predicting bidet seats would be popular in the next three years.
Manufacturers and installers cited rising sales and relatively low-cost options; the Brooklyn-based maker Tushy said it has shipped more than two million units since 2015, and installers noted basic attachments can cost as little as $35 while higher-end seats may require power.
