Mbappe accused of urging Real not to give Barcelona guard of honour after Super Cup defeat
Goal reports Kylian Mbappe has been accused of ensuring Real Madrid did not give Barcelona a guard of honour after a 3-2 defeat in the Spanish Super Cup final in Jeddah.
It is customary for the runners-up to pay homage, but Mbappe — who had returned to action after injury in Saudi Arabia and was introduced off the bench in the 76th minute — was spotted on camera waving team-mates away as Barcelona lifted the trophy. Barca retained the Super Cup in a five-goal contest: Raphinha scored, Vinicius Junior levelled in first-half stoppage time, Robert Lewandowski put Barcelona back ahead, Gonzalo Garcia drew Real level again before the interval, and Raphinha netted the winner in the 73rd minute.
Real did not line up as Barcelona applauded, and Mbappe was seen frustrated at full time. Manager Xabi Alonso said: "He wasn't ready to start with the intensity the match was going to have, and that's why we decided against it," and added that the team must "turn the page". Real sit four points adrift of Barca in La Liga and will face Albacete in the Copa del Rey last 16 on Wednesday.
