Simbarashe Cha, a Times photographer and visual columnist, photographed men’s coats on the streets of New York City for the Style Outside column, writing that come wintertime the coat often provides a person’s first impression.

His images and captions highlighted a range of memorable outerwear: long overcoats falling below the knee that sometimes echoed suit jackets with lapels, pieces trimmed with fur or metallic hardware, and mostly darker shades alongside a few lighter tones and one described as “white as snow.” Other photographed looks included a shrunken varsity jacket with baggy jeans, a tweedy oversized coat, fur-lined and shearling jackets, a distinctive canvas jacket, a mossy green overcoat, and coordinated puffers.

The piece includes photographs and videos made for Style Outside and reflects Cha’s ongoing visual documentation of street style and fashion around the world. A version of the article also appears in print.
