MeowGun on Steam: Quake-based retro FPS with kittens and a meow button under $15
MeowGun: Hell Denizen is out now on Steam and costs less than $15, and Kotaku's review says it’s a strong retro “boomer shooter” built on classic Quake tech.
Kotaku wrote that MeowGun uses FTEQW, an open-source version of the original Quake engine, which helps the game feel fantastic: guns are snappy, loud, and deadly; movement is fast but controlled; and combat with pistols, shotguns, bombs, and grenade launchers is a joy. The review also notes the starting pistol remains useful for picking off enemies and conserving ammo.
The review highlights some quirks: the protagonist, MeowMeow, is a half cat/half demon woman whose voice lines lean heavily on movie quotes and pop-culture references that repeat quickly and can be distracting, though Kotaku says the loud gameplay often drowns them out. There are also small kittens to find and save—Kotaku points out you can pet them, and there’s a dedicated button to make your character meow.
Kotaku’s overall take is that MeowGun isn’t revolutionary but delivers what fans of retro shooters want: lots of enemies to kill, fast music, satisfying guns, and short load times, all for under $15. As the review puts it, “In 2026, I can’t ask for much more.”
The review also says MeowGun isn’t likely to be a game the writer returns to year after year, so its long-term staying power remains unclear based on this early impression.
