Mewgenics beats Hades 2 to become the most-played roguelite ever on Steam
Mewgenics, a turn-based tactical cat-breeding combat game by Edmund McMillen and Tyler Glaiel, set a new Steam record for concurrent players among roguelike and roguelite games. It reached an all-time peak of 115,428 concurrent players on Sunday, Feb. 15, surpassing Hades 2's previous record of 112,947, which hit its peak on Sept.
28, 2025. McMillen also eclipsed the peak of his former game's 70,701 concurrent players, a record dating back to April 2021 (The Rebirth edition). Mewgenics released on Feb. 10 and had already topped 80,000 concurrent players one day after launch. The game has been a commercial success as well.
On Feb. 11, Tyler Glaiel said Mewgenics had made back its budget within three hours, and on Feb. 12 he posted on X that the team had sold half a million copies in 36 hours. Mewgenics's peak is notably higher than typical highs for the genre—first Hades (54,240), Vampire Survivors (77,061) and Balatro (43,905)—and it also outpaces other cat-themed games such as Stray (62,963).
