Mewgenics is the first legitimate 2026 GOTY contender
Just over a month into 2026, Mewgenics has emerged as the year’s first credible Game of the Year contender. Early reviews landed today and the game sits at an average score of 90 on both Metacritic and OpenCritic, making it the best-reviewed title of 2026 so far and the first to crack the 90 mark, ahead of Nioh 3 and Dragon Quest VII Reimagined.
Mewgenics is a large tactics roguelike where players breed cats and take them into turn-based battles across runs. Much of its appeal stems from a seemingly bottomless well of possibilities: brainy tactics, plentiful build synergies, and a sense of humor that won’t land for everyone.
