Mewgenics’ Success Brings Console Ports, DLC and an 82-Track OST
Mewgenics, the new roguelite RPG battler from Edmund McMillen and Tyler Glaiel, launched on February 10 and quickly became an unexpected hit. In less than a week it reached the No. 2 spot on Steam’s bestsellers and recorded 115,428 simultaneous players—notable for a single-player, offline game—and at the time of writing had more people playing than Overwatch.
The game blends elements of Slay the Spire, X-COM and Rogue Legacy as players lead teams of cats into turn-based battles and breed the victors for future runs. Official sales figures have not been released, but early indicators point to strong performance. Three hours after launch Glaiel said the seven-year development budget had been recouped, and by Friday 650,000 people had played the game; if those are all legitimate sales, that equates to over $12 million after Steam’s cut.
There was also a moment when the title briefly showed more players than Hades 2.
