Michael Owen assesses Man Utd’s plan to win Premier League by 2028
Michael Owen has delivered his verdict on Manchester United’s target to win the Premier League by 2028, Goal reported, as the club searches for a permanent manager following Ruben Amorim’s exit.
Amorim was relieved of his duties after a 63-game, 14-month stint, a decision announced on January 5, and Darren Fletcher has been placed in temporary charge while United finalise longer-term plans. Owen said: "I particularly like the Michael Carrick option." He added that if Fletcher "does well... it would be strange to remove him" and that Fletcher could retain the role until the end of the season.
United chief executive Omar Berrada outlined the 2028 target as part of "Project 150," saying it is about "establishing a series of targets within a timeframe so we can focus our efforts and energy on that goal" and asking, "Can the team win the Premier League title by 2028? Of course." Owen said the club needs "a very good manager and another three or four very good players," noting it is "difficult to see them winning the league in two-and-a-half years, but stranger things have happened." United, currently sixth in the Premier League, are next in action on Wednesday at Burnley; they have no European football this season and were knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Grimsby, but can still build foundations for future success.
