Microsoft reported $81 billion in second-quarter revenue, and CFO Amy Hood sent an internal memo to staff after the results that was viewed by Business Insider. In the note, Hood called out recent AI-related moves including new chips, coding tools, and deals with OpenAI and Anthropic.

Hood sends these emails each quarter when Microsoft discloses its financials. While they largely recap public results and what was discussed on the earnings call, the memos offer insight into what Microsoft leadership sees as most important for employees to know. The memo highlighted that Microsoft is gaining share in markets with an expanding total addressable market.

Hood specifically mentioned last week’s launch of the GitHub Copilot software development kit and Monday’s announcement of the Maia 200 AI chip, and said Azure commitments from OpenAI and Anthropic helped increase commercial bookings by 230% year over year. Hood also noted record capital spending of $37.5 billion on GPUs, CPUs, and datacenter infrastructure to support Azure demand and first-party AI usage.

The memo reiterated key results: revenue grew 17% (15% in constant currency), operating income grew 21% (19% in constant currency), Microsoft Cloud revenue surpassed $50 billion and grew 26% (24% in constant currency), and Azure and other cloud services revenue grew 39% (38% in constant currency).
