Microsoft fixes Copilot flaw that exposed user data via a single click
Microsoft has fixed a vulnerability in its Copilot AI assistant that let attackers harvest sensitive user data with a single click on a legitimate Copilot URL. The researchers who demonstrated the issue were white-hat security experts from Varonis. Varonis said the multistage attack exfiltrated data including the target’s name, location, and details of specific events from the user’s Copilot chat history.
The exploit continued to run after a user closed the Copilot chat and required no further interaction once the link was clicked. The attack bypassed enterprise endpoint security controls and detection by endpoint protection apps. According to Varonis, the base URL pointed to a Varonis-controlled domain and a long q parameter appended to the URL contained detailed instructions that Copilot and most other LLMs use to input URLs directly into a user prompt.
