Mimei Amoume hand-drew Frieren season 2 ending in flip‑book style
Polygon reports that the season 2 ending visuals for Frieren: Beyond Journey's End were hand-drawn by animator and director Mimei Amoume.
Directed by Amoume and set to the song "The Story of Us" by Milet, the ending depicts Frieren on her first journey — visiting towns, exploring the wilderness, hitchhiking and cooking over a campfire — animated like a flip book with each frame sketched by hand. Amoume demonstrated the technique on social media by showing the countless pages of her original drawings. The footage also shows Himmel writing about Frieren, seemingly in the time between their quest to kill the Demon King together and his eventual death, which helps convey their relationship and the impetus for Frieren’s later quest.
The piece argues that art with a human touch and emotion cannot be replaced by AI, noting that some recent TV credits, namely Marvel's Secret Invasion, have used AI while many anime creators have shunned the technology and praised traditional artistry, such as the new opening for Jujutsu Kaisen season 3. It says the painstaking detail on display stands as a testament to artistic dedication in an era tempted by easier shortcuts.
