MLS 3.0 welcomed by GMs and CSOs but executives urge faster action
Major League Soccer’s 3.0 vision drew broad approval from general managers and chief soccer officers, but many warned the league must move faster to keep pace in the Lionel Messi and World Cup era. Commissioner Don Garber unveiled the plan at the 2025 All-Star Game, calling it a comprehensive strategy for the league’s next 30 years: “We have focused on what we're calling MLS 3.0,” and added, “We're not just aligning with the world's best.
We're aiming to compete with them.” Executives say MLS already looks and feels more global. Charlotte FC’s Zoran Krneta spent the offseason meeting clubs in England, a sign of how modern MLS GMs now operate as internationally connected ambassadors. Still, Krneta cautioned: “We've been talking for the past three years [about] what to do, and now the first changes are starting, and I'm just hoping that it's not going to be the last of the changes.” FC Cincinnati’s Chris Albright added that earlier moves into the global transfer market came before the league was ready to capitalise.
