Twenty-six years after its release, Stephen Sommers' 1999 action-adventure The Mummy has resurfaced as a streaming hit on Hulu. The film reached third place on the streamer’s most popular films list, sitting above Black Panther and The Help, while its sequel, The Mummy Returns, also appears among Hulu’s most-watched titles.

Written and directed by Sommers and starring Brendan Fraser as Rick O'Connell, the story follows an Indiana Jones–like treasure hunter who joins the Carnahan siblings to recover a pharaonic artifact and inadvertently awakens the ancient priest Imhotep. The movie mixes lighthearted thrills with genuinely scary sequences, a balance that helped it stand out in the late 1990s; critics were divided and it sits at 63% on the Tomatometer, with Roger Ebert calling it, in part, "Good trash." A surprise hit at the turn of the century, The Mummy grossed more than $422 million and launched a franchise.
