More than half of game developers say generative AI harms the industry, GDC survey
A survey published by GDC, the annual industry conference taking place in San Francisco this March, found that 52% of more than 2,300 game developer respondents said they "think generative AI is having a negative impact on the game industry," according to report author Beth Elderkin.
The survey also found 33% of game development professionals use generative AI for their work, a figure GDC reported was largely unchanged from 2021, when 31% used it.
How developers feel about generative AI has shifted sharply: Elderkin's report notes that just 18% of respondents said AI was having a negative impact two years ago, and 30% said the same last year.
The results highlight a divergence between stable usage rates and a rising negative sentiment among developers, a trend the report describes as a dramatic shift in attitudes.
GDC published the survey ahead of its March conference in San Francisco; the report was authored by Beth Elderkin.
