Most dramatic Premier League title-race collapses
Arsenal's 2022-23 season, when they sat as many as eight points clear before a late wobble, has been added to a long list of dramatic title-race collapses. A 3-0 home defeat to Brighton and Manchester City's winning run have helped turn the tide; City’s win over Arsenal in April and three successive Arsenal draws that preceded a 4-1 loss all played a part.
Despite talk that the Gunners have 'bottled' the title, their season also prompted debate about the scale of the challenge they faced. One of the most famous examples came in 1995-96, when Kevin Keegan's Newcastle were 12 points clear at one stage before Manchester United closed the gap.
After a 4-3 defeat at Liverpool and a deflating final run, Keegan’s post-match outburst — "I will love it if we beat them, LOVE IT!" — became emblematic of a side that could not hang on, and United went on to clinch the title. The 1997-98 race saw Arsenal's late surge define the outcome.
