Released in 1996 alongside the film, Activision’s Muppet Treasure Island was a scene-by-scene point-and-click adventure that used live-action backdrops of the Muppets and the movie’s actors. Players clicked through stages searching for artifacts and solving short puzzles, and critics at the time praised its depth and humor — Entertainment Weekly wrote, “There are literally hundreds of point-and-click computer games for kids, but I can’t think of any that match the depth, ingenuity, and humor of Muppet Treasure Island.” The game also featured newly recorded scenes from the full range of Muppet performers plus Billy Connolly and Tim Curry, and marked the start of a sincere effort to make Muppet games that didn’t suck.

Before 1996, the franchise’s video game output was sparse and mostly uninspired.
