Prime Video cancels My Lady Jane after one season despite strong reviews
Prime Video has canceled the historical fantasy romance series My Lady Jane after one season, Collider reported. The show premiered in June 2024 and earned glowing reviews and a devoted fanbase before the streamer pulled the plug. My Lady Jane, a Prime Video original created by Gemma Burgess, reimagines Lady Jane Grey (Emily Bader) as an ambitious woman who wants to study medicine and is forced into an arranged marriage with Lord Guildford Dudley (Edward Bluemel).
The series leans into irreverent historical fantasy elements, including Ethians who can transform into animals and a snarky narrator, in a ‘‘what if’’ retelling of familiar Tudor history. Like Bridgerton, the show centers on romance—using tropes such as marriage of convenience and enemies-to-lovers—while pairing modern dialogue, anachronistic humor, and a soundtrack of rock covers by women artists.
Collider praised its vibrant costumes, bright production design, and confident, playful tone that balances comedy with emotional stakes. Despite rave reviews and strong word-of-mouth, Collider wrote that My Lady Jane failed to hit Prime Video’s immediate viewership targets and did not crack major weekly rankings, leading to a quick cancellation.
The decision prompted backlash, petitions, and public disappointment from fans and some high-profile supporters.
