Mystery Team gets special-edition Blu-ray 17 years after Sundance
Polygon reports that the Derrick Comedy film Mystery Team is receiving a special-edition Blu-ray from Lionsgate, 17 years after its Sundance debut.
Written by its three stars alongside director Dan Eckman and producer Meggie McFadden, the film follows Jason (Donald Glover), Duncan (DC Pierson) and Charlie (Dominic Dierkes) — teenage sleuths who still cast themselves as kid detectives — as they attempt to solve a grim double murder. The cast also includes Aubrey Plaza (as the victims' daughter), Ellie Kemper, Matt Walsh, Bobby Moynihan, Ben Schwartz and Lutz from 30 Rock, and the piece notes the movie sprang from Derrick Comedy, the NYU-formed sketch troupe.
The review says the film mixes broad, sketch-inflected comedy with darker town-noir elements, and notes its low-budget roots and occasional sloppy clue work; it adds that the movie isn’t universally regarded as a classic but calls it, "minute for minute," one of the funniest comedies of its era for viewers who connect with its tone. A new edition is on Blu-ray now from Lionsgate, and the film is streaming free with ads on Prime Video, Tubi, Plex, Fawesome and Fandango at Home.
