N.B.A. All-Star Map Mistaken for Medieval France — NYT > Education

At the N.B.A. All-Star Game, video screens introducing international players showed maps of their home countries — Giannis Antetokounmpo of Greece; Luka Doncic of Slovenia; Jamal Murray of Canada; Pascal Siakam of Cameroon; and Victor Wembanyama … of the Capetian realm?

Eagle-eyed Francophiles noticed that the map behind Wembanyama more closely resembled the boundaries of the Capetian dynasty than modern France, appearing to extend over Belgium and to exclude the Alsace region. "Yes, I think you could call that the Capetian realm at the height of their power from circa 1250 into the 14th century," wrote Justine Firnhaber-Baker, who added that Provence and much of eastern France was then in the hands of the Holy Roman Empire.
