Newcastle defeat PSV at St James’ Park as Guimarães leaves injured
Newcastle beat PSV Eindhoven at St James’ Park, moving closer to the Champions League knockout phase, but captain Bruno Guimarães limped off with an ankle problem.
The visitors’ attempts to play out from the back were repeatedly undone by a high, hard press led by Yoane Wissa and Anthony Gordon. Wissa, making his first Champions League start, opened the scoring after a weak clearance from Matej Kovar, then intercepted possession to set up Gordon. Harvey Barnes later finished a move started by a long kick from Nick Pope to seal the victory.
The win left Newcastle already guaranteed a place in the playoffs to determine the composition of March’s round of 16, with the side able to avoid that tie by finishing in the top eight. Eddie Howe praised the performance but stressed the difficulty of the next game at Paris Saint-Germain.
Guimarães was replaced by Lewis Miley in first-half stoppage time; Howe said the ankle was "sore and swollen but we hope it’s not too serious." With Aston Villa due at St James’ Park on Sunday, the extent of his absence remains a concern.
