Collider reports that, in April 2024, Deadline exclusively announced Nia DaCosta would direct the second entry in the 28 Years Later trilogy, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple.

Danny Boyle returned to the franchise for 28 Years Later but handed the director's chair for The Bone Temple to DaCosta; the two films were filmed nearly back-to-back, leaving expectations for how DaCosta would approach the material. DaCosta told CNN, "I came in saying, this is my vision for it. And I also don’t want to make a Danny Boyle movie, because I don’t know how to do that."

DaCosta previously revived the Candyman franchise with a 2021 film she co-wrote with Jordan Peele and Win Rosenfeld after Peele hired her in 2018. The 2021 Candyman emphasized story and social themes, earned positive critical response and made $77 million worldwide.

The article says DaCosta is being praised for putting her own spin on the 28 Years Later legend and that 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple is getting spectacular reviews; it also says her experience navigating Candyman prepared her for this project. Candyman is available to watch on Peacock in the U.S.
