The New South Wales government will introduce a minimum age to ride an ebike as part of reforms to address safety concerns and clamp down on "dangerous behaviour". An expert review led by Transport NSW will recommend a legal minimum age between 12 and 16 and consider whether children and teenagers should be able to carry passengers.

The review will consult child development and road safety experts, as well as parents and young people, with findings to be given to the minister for transport and the minister for roads by June ahead of a final decision. Under current rules a child of any age can ride an ebike and carry passengers if the bike design allows; Western Australia has already imposed an age limit of 16, and any child under 16 caught riding an ebike faces a $50 fine.
