Olympic skater cleared to use Minions song at 2026 Games
Coverage from Kotaku notes that Spanish figure skater Tomàs-Llorenç Guarino Sabaté faced losing the right to perform his Minions routine at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy after Universal Pictures initially refused to clear the song "Papaya" for the televised event.
Guarino Sabaté, 26, said he had submitted the music through the ISU ClicknClear system in August and had performed the Minions short program throughout the season while dressed in blue overalls and a bright yellow shirt. He wrote that he was informed last Friday that he was no longer permitted to use the program, and called the timing, days before the Olympic inauguration, "incredibly disappointing."
After an outpouring of public support, Universal reconsidered and officially granted the rights for the one special occasion. Guarino Sabaté thanked those who reposted, shared, and supported him, saying he was happy the routine could return to the ice.
