In a report from Polygon, Blizzard announced it is dropping the '2' from Overwatch and will refer to the game simply as Overwatch as it marks the game's 10th anniversary. The change was revealed during the Overwatch Spotlight. Game director Aaron Keller said, "Every year, we aim to bring major updates that improve and expand what it means to play and experience Overwatch," and added, "We realized Overwatch is a game that transcends any single number.

Moving forward, we're dropping the '2' and continuing simply as Overwatch." Blizzard said it will adopt a yearly story model, with each year including six seasons tied to a new story, and that story content will be delivered across in-game events, comics, stories, and videos collected in the in-game "story" tab.

Blizzard said the rename means there will not be an Overwatch 3 and that nothing is being taken away from what Overwatch 2 became.
