Overwatch 2 Drops The 2, Is Just Overwatch Again
Kotaku reports that during Blizzard’s Overwatch Spotlight presentation the company announced Overwatch 2 will drop the 2 and be called Overwatch moving forward. Blizzard framed the change as future-proofing: game director Aaron Keller said dropping the 2 is meant to convey a path forward of big annual moments that almost feel like expansions and to signal that Overwatch isn’t something players are supposed to move on from.
SVP of Live Games Walter Kong said putting a 2 on the game might have been a mistake in hindsight but that the transition period to an ongoing live game was necessary and taught the team how to deliver seasonal content and respond to players. Overwatch 2 was originally announced as a PvE-driven sequel with a cooperative campaign; the first three missions launched in 2023 but the campaign was quietly canceled amid development challenges.
