Blizzard is renaming Overwatch 2 back to Overwatch and will launch a large update next week that includes a new user interface, five new heroes, and a new storyline.

What had been the game's 21st season will be rebranded as season 1 of The Reign of Talon, a year-long narrative told through in-game events, cinematics, short stories, and comics; game director Aaron Keller called it "the biggest launch we've ever had in Overwatch's history."

Keller and Blizzard president Johanna Faries described the initiative as a commitment to Overwatch as a "forever game," saying dropping the "2" is meant to convey that the title is not intended to be replaced by a sequel and that the team wants to "gain players' confidence" and "have trust in the game."

The report noted the season will include creative new heroes, skins, and balance changes, and that Blizzard plans new hero releases every season alongside an evolving storyline; developers expressed excitement about the new direction.
