Overwatch’s smartest move: reworking old maps to serve the story
Overwatch's story has been uneven for some time. Nearly a decade after the first game, the narrative still begins with Winston recalling old agents, but Season 1: Conquest introduces a clearer antagonist in Vendetta's Talon as the Reign of Talon arc gets underway.
I expected that narrative beats would arrive via themed events, comics, shorts, and new hero and map releases. What surprised me was Team 4 revisiting older maps and touching them up simply for the sake of it. Some fans had long asked for a Watchpoint Gibraltar rework, yet the recent changes feel notable because of their scale.
Maps have reacted to story moments before—Juno's pod added to the attacker spawn on Dorado is one example—but Gibraltar's overhaul freshens a familiar arena while also pushing the plot forward. Though I once wanted Team 4 to stick to a one-hero, one-map rotation each season, small tweaks to existing maps have proven unexpectedly effective.
