Ex-Liverpool striker Owen told Goal that Mohamed Salah could be revitalised and have a major impact at Liverpool in the second half of the season, and that the club’s decision to bring him back early looked like a "stroke of genius."

Asked whether Salah would see out his contract or seek a new challenge early in 2026, Owen said: "I can see him seeing it out. I wouldn’t be surprised if it ended but if I was a betting man, I would say that he will see it out." He added that "they have almost kissed and made up" and that returning Salah before AFCON should reduce the "frenzy" when he comes back.

Owen pointed to Liverpool’s current squad issues — Alexander Isak with a long-term injury, Hugo Ekitike with a short-term injury and other departures and setbacks — and said the team will need a reliable goalscorer. "Mo Salah is a banker to score goals in the vast majority of games. Liverpool haven’t got that," he said, adding he could see Salah returning "reinvigorated and ready to make a big difference."
