Owen says buying Harry Kane now could be 'dead money'
Michael Owen, speaking via Casino.org where he is UK ambassador, told Goal that buying Harry Kane now would be "dead money."
Owen said a transfer depends on timing and who wants you, noting you "only have one shot at it" and everything must align — your age, who needs you and who wants you. He added that eight years ago Kane might not have pictured himself at Bayern Munich and could have seen moves to Manchester United, Manchester City, Real Madrid or Barcelona, but club situations at the time influenced his options: "Manchester United were really struggling," City had just bought Erling Haaland, "[Kylian] Mbappe was signing for Real Madrid," and Robert Lewandowski was at Barcelona, so "it needs to be a perfect storm."
On Kane specifically Owen said: "He’s still an incredible player, but it really is dead money if you go and buy Harry Kane. You are buying for the here and now and how many years are you going to get? One, two, three, four? I don’t know." He added that Kane was "showing no sign of ageing," leaving the length of any future return uncertain.
