Owlcat’s The Expanse: Osiris Reborn is a Mass Effect-style third-person RPG

Owlcat Games is adapting The Expanse into The Expanse: Osiris Reborn, a choice-driven, third-person action RPG set in the 24th century where humanity has colonized the stars, GamesRadar+ reports as part of its Big in 2026 coverage. The game mixes cover-based third-person shooting with party and relationship mechanics: players take the role of a mercenary leading a ship and crew through a galactic conspiracy, can build bonds with companions, and fight alongside two companions who can be given orders during shootouts—a setup the piece says should appeal to Mass Effect fans.

Owlcat argues the project matches a studio-wide push to expand scope. Game design director Leonid Rastorguev told GamesRadar+ that as a studio "we’d been feeling a growing ambition to go bigger," and that The Expanse's detailed world-building supports an "epic, high-stakes story" while preserving a grounded, personal narrative focused on the player and their companions.

The team overhauled its technology stack and gameplay philosophy to deliver a more cinematic presentation, Rastorguev says. Owlcat highlights three development challenges it has tackled: zero-gravity gameplay (covered in a dedicated dev diary), VFX-led environmental destruction, and extensive attention to incidental detail to make the world feel alive.
