Owlet Dream Sock: a smart sock that gave me peace of mind
The Owlet Dream Sock is an FDA-cleared baby sleep tracker that retails for $299, is FSA/HSA-eligible, and is often discounted for limited-time sales. It goes beyond a typical video monitor by tracking heart rate, blood oxygen and sleep patterns, and it uses three alarms: yellow for an incorrect fit, purple for an abnormal reading, and blue for out-of-range or low battery.
False low-oxygen and abnormal heart-rate alarms are exceedingly rare—I’ve only had a handful in our 8+ years using Owlet products—but I wish the device offered a separate low-battery alert. The sock holds a photoplethysmography (PPG) sensor worn on the baby’s foot and pairs with a base station and a mobile app.
The kit includes the sensor, a base station and four fabric socks in two sizes to fit newborns through 18 months, while a Plus option adds toddler sizes (30 to 55 lbs) and an extension pack to cover birth through five years.
