Patriots' Christian Gonzalez in concussion protocol, expected to practice Wednesday
New England Patriots Pro Bowl cornerback Christian Gonzalez is in concussion protocol ahead of Sunday's divisional round against the Houston Texans, Cbssports reported.
Gonzalez exited last Sunday's Wild Card win over the Los Angeles Chargers after hitting his head on the turf while in coverage against Quentin Johnston; he had recorded two pass breakups in his postseason debut and was initially ruled questionable to return before being downgraded to out following a locker-room evaluation.
Coach Mike Vrabel said he expects Gonzalez to participate in Wednesday practice and confirmed the cornerback is in the protocol: "I would say that he would be in the protocol. How long that lasts, I don't know," Vrabel said, adding the team will follow the necessary steps for his return. Gonzalez told reporters after the game that he was not allowed to speak but said he was "fine."
Gonzalez has 12 pass breakups including the playoffs, a career-high 69 tackles, earned his first Pro Bowl selection and was named to the All-Pro second team; he is still seeking his first interception of the year. His availability for the divisional round remains in question and will be one of the most impactful storylines for New England as the team proceeds through the postseason.
