Penny, a sleek Doberman pinscher with a rich, shiny black coat, won the 150th Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, becoming the fifth member of her breed to take best in show. Her handler, Andy Linton, who previously won best in show in 1989, stood with her as she was named the champion.

Reserve best in show went to Cota, a Chesapeake Bay retriever admired for his essential dogginess who celebrated by grabbing his ribbon. The final lineup also included an Afghan hound, a Maltese, a Lhasa apso and an Old English sheepdog; the judge, David Fitzpatrick, said it was a contest that will go down in history.

The competition at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center featured 2,500 dogs from more than 200 breeds, with winners of seven groups advancing to the best in show ring. Linton said Penny enjoys affection and food; he also said she will go to live with her breeder-owners in Toronto and may have puppies.
