Penny the Doberman Wins Best in Show at Westminster
Nytimes reports that Penny, a sleekly majestic Doberman pinscher, won the 150th Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, becoming the fifth member of her breed to take best in show in Westminster’s 150-year history.
Reserve best in show went to Cota, a Chesapeake Bay retriever who celebrated by grabbing his ribbon. The final lineup also included Zaida the Afghan hound, Cookie the Maltese, JJ the Lhasa apso, Graham the Old English sheepdog and a sprightly smooth fox terrier.
Penny’s handler, Andy Linton, who won best in show in 1989 with a Doberman named Indy, has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease; after the win he said, “I had some goals, and this was one of them.”
Penny, 4, is described as lithe and easygoing with a rich, shiny black coat. Outside the ring she enjoys begging for affection and eating, and Mr. Linton said she will go to live with her breeder-owners in Toronto and, with luck, have puppies.
