Philippe Coutinho asks to terminate Vasco contract after being booed
Philippe Coutinho has asked to terminate his contract with Vasco da Gama after coming under sustained criticism from the club's supporters. The former Liverpool, Barcelona and Bayern Munich player returned to his hometown side initially on loan in 2024 and completed a permanent move back to Brazil in 2025.
His career since leaving Liverpool for Barcelona in 2018 never quite reached the heights expected, with spells at Bayern Munich, Aston Villa and a loan to Al-Duhail before the return to Vasco. Since rejoining the Rio club he has scored 17 goals in 80 appearances, but struggles for consistency and mounting criticism have left him unhappy.
Globo reported that Coutinho told Vasco president Pedrinho he wants his deal ended. Club management tried to persuade him to stay, and renewal talks had begun, but the player is said to view his current state of mind as irreversible; he was booed by his own fans in his last appearance and has been a target of local media in recent weeks.
