Kotaku reports that later this year, assuming it doesn’t get delayed again, Fable will return to the whimsical fantasy world of Albion as a reboot developed by Playground Games, the studio behind the Forza Horizon franchise.

The new Fable is described as an open-world, third-person fantasy action RPG in which players begin as a child who loses their family and becomes a solo hero. The franchise’s British humor and less-than-serious vibes remain, and while Playground Games has called the project a reboot, Playground founder and general manager Ralph Fulton told IGN that “we do share lore and some of that originating lore of the Fable universe is really important to our story.”

Playground says the map will be smaller than a Forza Horizon world to prioritise detail and immersion, with every building enterable. The game features a morality system that changes how people react but does not alter the protagonist’s appearance; actions may be seen as evil by some NPCs and noble by others. Fable is confirmed single-player, allows gender selection, and returns mechanics such as marriages, home ownership, jobs and divorces—though it does not include a dog.

Xbox has not provided a specific release date; the title is currently slated to launch sometime in Fall 2026 and is planned for PS5 as well as Xbox Series X/S, Game Pass and PC.
